Caroline's Birthday

Day 14, Monday June 6, 2011

Our baby is 28,  wow.    It just does not seem right, not to be baking a black-forest cake, I just don’t know where the time went.  We are so lucky to have such great children.

Seems like a good day to take the ATV out and go for a drive in the back country towards the Valdez Glacier.

Valdez is a small community located in a beautiful inlet with  quiet a history.  In 1898, the gold rush hit and thousands arrive, seeking fortune but were  ill prepared for the elements and died on the glacier.
In 1964 Good Friday a 9.2  earthquake demolished the town, the new town site is 4 kilometres west.
In 1989 the Exon Valdez oil spill was the world largest environmental disaster of its time.

Through all of this Valdez has rebounded, still strong and beautiful.

After picking up some rock fish and halibut at the Peter Pan fish processing plant, we head back over the beautiful Chugach Mountain Range.   The Thompson Pass set the Alaska snowfall record, 974.5 inche.

We stop for the night in the middle of no where at Grand View campsite because they have internet.  With Neal’s assistance we find a web site to stream the hockey game.  Later that evening the highlight of the day,  we video chatted with Caroline and Matt.  Technology is amazing.

We have now been on the road for two weeks and have driven over 5,000 kilometres in 67 hours and have taken over 500 pictures.
