PTARMIGAN ( CHICKEN - ALASKA )

Two Chicks in Chicken
We drove the Taylor Highway to  Chicken, Alaska.  We had been warned that the road in not good, and it wasn’t.  The scenery however makes up for the slow driving.  Chicken, or Ptarmigan, as it was originally called, is in the middle of nowhere.  There are 6 year round residents, no electricity or running water.   They do however have a lot of tourist, because if you want to drive the TOP of the WORLD HIGHWAY, you will end up in Chicken.   This has caused Chicken some logistical problems.  There seem to be three hot spots in Chicken, all in fierce competition for the all mighty dollar.

Chicken was an original gold town, and there is still a lot of gold panning going on.  However I think the gold is not in the river, but in the tourist.   There are several people who set up for the summer to go looking for gold.

With the price of gold at record highs, there is a gold rush in Chicken.  You can stake claims, buy claims, sell claims and rent claims, for panning.  There is also a strip along the river, open to public for panning.

I watched a few gold panners and quickly realized this is not for me.  I do not have the patience.

Why is Ptarmigan, now called Chicken

Downtown Chicken
Because the Gold Panners could not pronounce Ptarmigan .
