DAWSON CITY

Signage for Dawson City on Top of the World Hwy

The Klondike Gold Rush, (Yukon gold rush) , was a frenzied gold rush that drew tens of thousands of would-be prospectors from all over the world to the Klondike River. The City is located on the confluence of the Yukon and KlondikeRiver.
In its hay day, there were 40,000 residents, 40 Saloons and 400 hookers in Dawson City. The gold rush lasted only a few years, essentially ending in 1899.   Now only 1500 year round residents remain.   The economy is now based mostly on tourism as 60,000 visitors invade the city annually.   Sorry could not find any stats on how many hookers remain.

Diamond Tooth Gerdie, is a re-cration of a  Gold Rush era salon, with casino, honky-tonk piano and show girls.    Seems Henry made a friend there, Gerdie.

Local cowboy on Front Street
Dawson city has wooden sidewalks, like in the 19th century.  Many restored old homes, and some unrestored.

Front Street
Sourdoughs became the nickname for the gold prospectors who came north looking for riches and fell in love with the north and never leave.  We have come across that term all through the Alaska and Yukon.

Sourtoe Saloon at Downtown Hotel
“Sourtoe” is a Dawson City tradition.  At the Downtown Hotel, in the Sourdough bar they serve the Sourtoe cocktail. serves up a drink with a petrified toe in it. You purchase your shot of choice at the bar and then join Captain Jack  ( Angela) and  Down the drink in the presence of a witness.  Quess which one of us is now a member of the  the exclusive Sourtoe Club?

Rolling Hotel

Rotel
Our last day in Dawson, Henry saw these peculiar looking buses.  He  talked to the driver.  The bus was brought over from Germany.  The company is called Rotel (Rolling Hotel).  They drove from Toronto, to Alaska, and down to San Fransisco in 50 days.  There are 24 passengers,  each with own bed on board.  The buses are equipped with kitchens, and they stay on campgrounds.
